Team CHOMP, like many of Enfield’s customers was looking to create a unique, “market-leading” solution.
BattleBots® new rules for 2020 gave a 250-pound weight bonus to any walking robot - weight that could be used to add armor or counterbalance the angular momentum of swinging a hammer. However, if this weight bonus is completely consumed by the servo axes needed to make it walk, it would defeat the purpose. To make their design possible, team CHOMP needed a lightweight, power-dense method of controlling their robot.
Enfield’s S2 pneumatic cylinder positioning systems offered a perfect solution.
S2 POSITIONING SYSTEM
The S2 servo pneumatic positioning systems used in CHOMP combine together a proportional valve, sensors and embedded control electronics to linearly position pneumatic cylinders, creating an air servoactuator that can be controlled from the PLC.
This electropneumatic positioner allows actuators to stop at unlimited midstroke positions, follow complex profiles or simply prevents slamming at the ends
